Why Is There an Adderall (dextroamphetamine) Shortage?
I actually laughed receiving this message. Even though this question can easily be shaken off, it does feel necessary to address the national shortage. Here are announcements from the FDA/DEA:
October 22, 2022: FDA Announces Shortage of Adderall
August 1, 2023: FDA Actions to Address Shortages in Prescription Stimulants
The issue appears to be intermittent manufacturing delays from the actual manufacturers (as much as people would like to blame physicians, pharmacists, nurses, etc.). The 99% of healthcare professionals have zero impact on the capabilities of the manufacturer. Teva, a huge contributor to production, is apparently falling behind on orders and struggling to catch up. It is unfortuanate that the shortage so happens to occur at this particular time. With no sustainable solution in the near future, patients may have to adjust their ADHD medication to other amphetamine-derivatives.
