Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis - #PHARMFAX

The rabies virus infects the central nervous system of mammals. Exposure from domestic dogs. wild animals like bats, raccoons. Within 10 days, patients have a near 100% fatality rate once symptomatic. Imagine riding out into the sun delirious afraid of water. Thats ruff. We've got two options if you've been exposed to a wild animal.


Most individuals are not vaccinated, that’s mostly for safari and high risk workers. The rabies vaccine schedule is day 0, 3, 7, and 14. Immunocompromised take a 5th dose at day 28. Rabies immune globulin should be given within 7 days of the first vaccine. The purpose is to provide your body some immunity against rabies until the vaccine kicks in.
