Two neurotransmitters that maintain neurochemical balance are GABA and glutamate, which are sedating andexcitatory, respectively. Ethanol stimulates GABA. Chronic use downregulates the receptors, requiring more ethanol. You have an increase in glutamate to compensate for this. What happens in alcoholics when they stop drinking?Their physiology has adapted with excessive glutamate as a compensatory mechanism for alcohol. No GABA stimulation? An imbalance of gluatamate to GABA causes hyperactive alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Severe forms of alcohol withdrawal results in delirium tremens.
